CANCER AWARENESS HEATH TALK

1. Cancer definition:

it’s a disease in which abnormal cells divide(multiply)without control and spread to nearby tissues and other body parts through the blood or lymph if not detected early

2. Cancer Staging ;

Stage 1(Insitu): The cancerous cells are present but have not spread to nearby tissues

Stage 2 (Localized ): The cancerous cells are confined(limited)within the site of origin with no signs that it has spread to nearby tissues

Stage 3 (Regional): The cancerous cells have spread to nearby lymph nodes, tissues and organs

Stage 4 (Distant/Metastatic ): Cancer cells have spread to distant parts of the body

3. Risk factors both modifiable and non-modifiable

Non Modifiable factors are the ones we have no control over to include age, gender, race and ethnicity. Modifiable factors we got control over to include diet and, lifestyle, eg.smoking and taking alcohol

Signs and symptoms

  • Unexplained weight loss (more than 10 percent)
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge from the vagina
  • Sores that don’t heal (more than 3 months)
  • Cough or hoarseness that doesn’t go away
  • Lumps that are painless and immobile in the breast and other body parts
  • Change in bowel movement such as constipation or diarrhea that doesn’t go away or even change in how your stool looks
  • Bladder changes such as pain when passing urine, blood in urine or needing to pass urine more frequently

Early Detection ,Screening and prevention

Once Cancer is detected early right interventions taken one can achieve Cure hence it’s important to go for annual medical checkup and incase one is unwell don’t hesitate to seek medical attention on time Examples of Cancers that can be easily screened and detected early with good outcome after treatment include;

  • Breast Cancer
  • Cervical Cancer
  • Colon Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Testicular Cancer

5. Available treatment modalities in Kenya

.Radiotherapy- most referral and teaching hospitals around the country and, Private hospital to include Aghakan, Nairobi ,Nairobi West ,Eldoret HCG Cancer Care and Outspan Hospitals Surgery -Most public hospital Level 4 and above, faith based and private hospitals

6. Cancer Prevention

  •  
  • Eat healthy and balanced diet
  • Avoid tobacco use either directly or indirectly
  • Exercise regularly maintain a good weight and be fit
  • Protect yourself from direct sunlight especially 10am-5pm sun. Wear shades, long sleeves and a hat and if one can afford sunscreen the better
  • Avoid multiple sexual partners, avoid sexual indulgence at an early age and use protection when having more than one sexual partner
  • Get vaccinated against HPV virus, hepatitis
  • Consume high fiber diet, fruits and vegetables
  • Going for screening tests at regular intervals
  • Breast ultrasound, mammogram and yearly Clinical breast examination
  • Cervical Cancer screening and Prostrate Cancer screening
  • Limit alcohol intake

6. NHIF and UHC

Nhif covers for chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery in all NHIF accredited hospitals Like in radiotherapy they cover each session at an approved rate of k 3,600 per session In Chemotherapy they have an approved rate of up to 24,000 for first line while 2nd and 3rd line at approved rate of up to 150,000. They also cover partially required imaging services. Surgery is fully covered in fully accredited hospitals but prior authorization has to be sought.
