Awareness mission to Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri

The Mission was carried out on 13th October 2024. A local family whose mother had passed away,

The awareness included:

due to cancer had requested the church to create awareness among the members. The family also requested Tumaini to partner with them. The church health committee was very helpful in all the activities and this mission encouraged them to do more activities for their parish.

  • Talk on what is cancer, causes, how to identify it, where to go for assistance and government resources that are available
  • 2 survivor testimonies - the survivors are a living prove that cancer is not a death sentence.,
  • Breast cancer examination with referral for anybody with symptoms by medical staff
  • Diabetes and hypertension examination by the church Health Committee.
  • About 300 men and women were present - 27 men and 77 women availed themselves for breast examination.

Cancer Staging

    • Stage 1(Insitu): The cancerous cells are present but have not spread to nearby tissues
    • Stage 2 (Localized ): The cancerous cells are confined(limited)within the site of origin with no signs that it has spread to nearby tissues
    • Stage 3 (Regional): The cancerous cells have spread to nearby lymph nodes, tissues and organs
    • Stage 4 (Distant/Metastatic ): Cancer cells have spread to distant parts of the body

Risk factors both modifiable and non-modifiable Non Modifiable factors are the ones we have no control over to include age, gender, race and ethnicity. Modifiable factors we got control over to include diet and, lifestyle, eg.smoking and taking alcohol
